Shawn is a Level 2 USS Coach whose lifelong connection to skating began at age four on the free outdoor rinks run by the volunteer fire department in his hometown in Maine. As a teenager, he transitioned to roller skating, a shift that eventually set the stage for his future in speedskating.
After moving to Colorado in 1995, Shawn was recruited into an inline speedskating club, where he earned several national rankings and ultimately became a professional inline racer. He later switched to short track ice with hopes of pursuing long track, following in the footsteps of many of his former inline teammates. By the time the 2002 Olympics arrived, however, Shawn’s priorities shifted toward fatherhood.
Following the 2006 Olympics, Shawn was invited to bring his passion for the sport to coaching with Colorado Gold, where he has remained ever since. “It’s an honor to help support others in achieving their goals in the sport,” he says—a sentiment that continues to guide his work with athletes today.
